All of Us Tribal Engagement

The All of Us Research Program is committed to ensuring that the program reflects the diversity of the United States and hopes to engage with Tribal Nations to facilitate the inclusion of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations in this program. The program recognizes that Tribes are sovereign nations and seeks ongoing input from Tribal leaders through formal consultation and listening sessions to understand how the All of Us Research Program can develop meaningful, culturally sensitive collaborations with Tribal Nations and communities.

As announced in the Federal Register and in our Dear Tribal Leader Letter (see Resources, below), the All of Us Research Program has begun formal consultation with Tribal Nations.

The current period of Tribal Consultation extends until November 30, 2019 to ensure additional time for input, per Tribal organizations’ recommendations. Input and comments are welcome at: [email protected]. After the completion of Tribal Consultation, All of Us will publish a report summarizing the comments and concerns the program has received and outlining initial plans for addressing the issues raised by Tribal leaders. (Read our announcement on the timeline.)

In preparation for consultation, the All of Us team conferred with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Tribal Advisory Committee, spoke with Tribal leaders and researchers both through informal conversations and at meetings and conferences, requested listening sessions, and conducted an informal literature review. The All of Us Research Program also established a Tribal Collaboration Working Group (TCWG), consisting of Tribal leaders, researchers, IRB members, and community members to provide input on the inclusion of AI/AN individuals in All of Us. The TCWG’s report was intended to advise the program on approaches to consultation and collaboration, and to serve as a resource for Tribal leaders as they prepare their comments for consultation and listening sessions.

The purpose of this page is to provide information to members of Tribal Nations so they may participate in consultation and provide the All of Us Research Program with feedback.
