The Arizona Daily Star highlights the All of Us Research Program in the feature ‘The Heart of the Matter’ sharing comments from NIH Director Dr. Francis S. Collins, comparing the ambitious precision medicine effort to the renowned Framingham Heart Study.

Xavier Bofill De Ros, a postdoctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute, explains the benefits and potential of the Human Genome Project, including the ambitious All of Us Research Program designed to collect one million human genomes and “unlock genetic secrets.”

Dr. Cora E. Lewis, a professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology in the UAB School of Public Health, talked to the Birmingham Times about the pause of in-person enrollment for the All of Us Research Program when the pandemic started in March 2020 and explained how in-person recruitment resumed at UAB in January 2021 with safety precautions in place.

The All of Us Research Program is working to respectfully engage American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people and support their inclusion in precision medicine research. NIH engaged in a two-year Tribal Consultation process to gather input from tribal leaders; as a result, All of Us leaders reaffirmed a set of commitments to Tribal Nations, including rules to never recruit on tribal lands or disclose participants’ tribal affiliations without a tribe’s agreement.

All of Us at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), in collaboration with partners throughout the country, is laying the groundwork for research that may help eliminate health disparities, particularly in communities of color. Historically, these communities have been underrepresented in biomedical research and experience the greatest disparities in health care access and health outcomes. Karen Dotson and her All of Us team at MCW want to lead the region in program enrollments from communities of color.

Eric Dishman, Chief Innovation Officer of the All of Us Research Program, spoke to the BioTeam about the diversity of the All of Us cohort, the diversity of data, and opening the All of Us platform to all researchers.

The National Institutes of Health will expand and strengthen commitments to respectfully engage American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people and support their inclusion in the All of Us Research Program, a landmark health research effort that aims to find more precise ways to prevent and treat disease.

NIH’s All of Us Research Program is expanding the organization’s senior leadership team. The program seeks a Director of Health Equity who will provide expertise to address health equity issues for All of Us and improve inclusion and equity in precision medicine. The program is looking for applicants with a commitment not only to scientific excellence, but also to confronting the systemic and structural racism that has long affected the health and lives of underrepresented groups across the country.

The research community has responded to the recognized lack of population diversity in clinical trials. A cornerstone of the All of Us Research Program is the enrollment of racial and ethnic minorities to ensure that diversity can inform precision medicine research.
